The New War Of The Planet Of The Apes Trailer Is Thrilling And Even Shocking
The conflict between man and ape is about to hit its tipping point. The first two Planet of the Apes reboots laid the foundation for this epic struggle, and this summer, War for the Planet of the Apes will see one side reigning supreme for good in the end. If you have any familiarity of with the Planet of the Apes series or have any sense of title comprehension, it's already easy enough to figure out who will be the victors, but nevertheless, many moviegoers are excited to see how the next chapter of Caesar's life will unfold. Following the first trailer's release in December, War for the Planet of the Apes has dropped the second trailer that shows off a lot of new material, including a shocking betrayal.
This War for the Planet of the Apes trailer elaborated on many of the beats its predecessor set up, including the personal conflict between Caesar and Woody Harrleson's character, simply known as The Colonel. Colonel even makes a great point during a debate with his ape counterpart about how no matter what Caesar says about how he offered the humans mercy, eventually the apes would replace the humans. It's the law of nature. That said, probably the biggest new reveal in this preview is that Caesar will be betrayed by one of his own. While I originally thought this was his buddy Maurice, who's been by his side for more than a decade, on closer inspection, this appears to be a new character. Regardless, this betrayal definitely stings for Caesar. He already went through this with Koba in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but this time it's arguably worse since this other ape is siding with the humans and not even pretending to fight for ape-kind.
Another interesting part of the trailer was Caesar and his gang meeting a fellow ape who's able to speak English much better than the familiar simian cast. Voiced by Steve Zahn, this ape has only been identified as "Bad Ape," and in an interview with Slashfilm a few months back, Zahn mentioned that "Bad Ape" comes from a Portland zoo and will become a "valuable asset" to the other apes because of his different perspective. Still, you get these sense that "Bad Ape" has been through a lot by the way he describes to Caesar how he's managed to survive.
As with the last two Planet of the Apes reboot entries, War for the Planet of the Apes also promises plenty of action, and this trailer sprinkled in a few more of these intense moments, including showing what happens to Caesar after he jumps at The Colonel in that waterfall. It remains to be seen how the new Apes series will move forward after War for the Planet of the Apes, but this trailer makes an even stronger case for this being an exciting and proper conclusion to the trilogy that began in 2011.
War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14, and check out our comprehensive 2017 movie guide to find out when this year's other blockbusters are coming out.
