Netflix releases the Horse Girl trailer starring Alison Brie. In addition to starring, this is Brie's first foray into writing. Horse Girl is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next week before debuting on the streaming service next month.

Brie is a comedic actress known for her spunky and energetic personality. Along with her charm, her talent has helped her score roles like Ruth in Netflix original GLOW, Annie Edison in Community and Lainey in Sleeping With Other People. Brie, however, does have one prior producing credit. Brie discovered the webseries Teachers, helped pitch the TV show to networks and backed the show as an executive producer. Brie has plenty of experience on camera and enough behind the camera to create a successful film, giving Horse Girl a tremendous amount of potential.

Horse Girl is described as a darkly humorous psychological drama in its official logline. Brie plays Sarah, a social outcast who spends her time working at an arts and crafts store and watching crime shows. The self-proclaimed introvert prefers hanging out with the horses that she cares for over any form of human interaction despite feeling the pressure to fit in with mainstream culture. However, Sarah's simplistic life becomes increasingly more complicated after she experiences a relentless stream of unsettlingly surreal dreams. Sarah is forced to navigate her visions, which increasingly become more realistic along with the already overwhelming struggle of finding her truth as a woman. Watch the Horse Girl trailer and check out the poster below.

Horse Girl is stacked with an all star cast. Debby Ryan, John Reynolds, Molly Shannon, John Ortiz, Paul Reiser, and Jay Duplass will play the characters in Sarah's life. While their official credits have yet to be listed, the trailer gives a first glimpse at who each actor will be portraying. Shannon plays Sarah's coworker at the craft shop who acts as a mother figure. Ryan is Sarah's well-meaning but clearly more social roommate who encourages Sarah to start dating love interest Brian, played by Reynolds. All of these characters witness Sarah's transformation as the visions begin to take over.

Brie may have more comedic acting credits, but her performance in the Horse Girl trailer and other roles such as Diane Nyugen in BoJack Horseman show that she has an impressive range and is more than capable of doing this story justice. While Horse Girl sounds like the name of a teen flick featuring a girl who falls in love at her horse riding camp, this iteration of the title is much darker. Horse Girl is an intense immersion into the brain of someone suffering from mental illness. Between the talent and fascinating subject matter, the film has the potential to be the next Netflix original hit.

On the other hand, this isn't the first time that this theme has been explored. Amazon Prime's Undone also follows a young woman as she tries to discern whether her visions are a special ability that she possesses or schizophrenia. Horse Girl will have to bring something special to the table in order to stand out from the rest of the films on this subject matter.

Horse Girl releases Friday, February 7 on Netflix.
