Netflix has officially ordered a teen drama in the style of Lord Of The Flies to series. The announcement comes as Netflix continues development on a slew of projects for the year.

For quite some time, readers of the original Lord of the Flies novel by William Golding have wondered if it would end up receiving another screen adaptation. The last adaptation of the novel was the 1990 film of the same name, directed by Harry Hook. A previous adaptation was made in 1963, directed by Peter Brook, whose film is considered more faithful to the text. The original story follows a group of schoolboys stranded on an island who slowly regress into their most primal selves. The Netflix ordered series, while bearing some resemblance to Golding's novel, will put its own spin on the tale.

According to THR, the series will feature a group of teenagers as they return from a trip cut short, to find their town abandoned by its residents, and now rendered inescapable. Over the course of the series, the teenagers will party, mourn their loss, and ultimately fight for their very survival. Kathryn Newton, known for playing Claire Novak on The CW's Supernatural - and soon set to reprise her role on HBO's Big Little Lies - will star in the series as Allie, a young woman who becomes the leader of the teenage wasteland. Chris Keyser and Marc Webb will serve the series as executive producers. Keyser will also write the script, while Webb is slated to direct, with production on track to begin this September.

In August 2017, it was reported that a new female-centered re-imagining of Lord Of The Flies, was in development at Warner Bros. The adaptation was reported to be directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel. There's been no further news about the project since, however. With that official adaptation now seemingly in limbo, Netflix's currently untitled series might be the closest fans of the story get to a modern version anytime soon.

With Newton the only announced cast member thus far, the show offers an opportunity to include fresh faces from a wide array of backgrounds; both established actors as well as newcomers. Netflix could very well have another hit on their hands the likes of Stranger Things; telling a mature, intense story around young adults. Only time will tell if that formula will end up working as well a second time.
