The Naked Gun reboot is happening whether we like it or not, and a new interview with the co-writer of Paramount's new comedy might provide some solace to fans worried it'll stray too far from its source material.

In a brief chat with Crave Online, The Naked Gun's co-writer Robert Ben Garant mentioned that the reboot - which stars Ed Helms as Leslie Nielsen’s character Frank Drebin - will indeed pay homage to the 1988 original, but won't be a methodical remake, nor discard the flavor of the original entirely.

“Our take is that Ed Helms is Frank Drebin, no relation,” Garant said. “That’s how he introduces himself.”

When asked if Helms was going to die his hair to match Nielsen's, Garant said they don't want to ape Nielsen's performance.

“[Helms is] already kind of going gray. We’re making it pretty clear that he’s not Leslie Nielsen. Those are just too big of shoes to fill but we’re going to try to do as good as those. Those movies are so funny. They’re so solid.”

Garant and his writing partner Thomas Lennon are aiming to "re-invent" the Naked Gun world, while embracing its style.

“We are trying to reinvent the world because that world was very ‘Dragnet,’ but we’re trying to fit in 100 jokes a page,” Garant said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re very much embracing the style.”

And as for the reboot's working title? Episode IV - A New Hope.

"That will change," Garant deadpanned to Crave.
