Mysterio's portrayal of being a hero in Spider-Man: Far From Home is actually comic accurate, says director Jon Watts. The full Spider-Man: From From Home trailer recently premiered, promising a unique story, as well as an epilogue to the events in Avengers: Endgame.

Far From Home is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the final film in the MCU's Phase 3. Although Peter will probably not return to space, the film's story brings him to Europe for a summer vacation. Though it appears Peter wants to have a normal trip, Nick Fury has other plans. The film is introducing one of Spider-Man's classic villains: Mysterio. Interestingly, Mysterio claims to be from another dimension, thus potentially opening the door to a Marvel multiverse. What is also interesting is that it seems Mysterio may not turn into an antagonist until a future film.

During Screen Rant's visit to the Far From Home set last summer, we talked with director Jon Watts about the character of Mysterio. Many viewers were surprised from the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers that Mysterio appeared to be a good guy; but as Watts points out, the character actually debuted as a hero, at least to the public. Watts said:

"Mysterio enters the comic as a hero. So, I always took it right back to the source material and what made that character exciting initially."

Watts is referring to Mysterio's first appearance in the thirteenth issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. In this 1964 comic, Spider-Man has seemingly turned into a criminal. Peter isn't sure what to think, even considering if he's robbing without knowing it. Toward the middle act, a costumed person calling himself Mysterio says he will bring the rogue Spider-Man to justice. The two characters meet atop the Brooklyn Bridge, and impressively, Mysterio is able to completely overpower Spider-Man. Later, during their rematch, it's revealed that Mysterio pretended to be Spider-Man to frame the hero. So, technically Mysterio was always a villain, but he portrayed himself publicly as a hero.

Mysterio's debut in the comic world was quite impressive. Spider-Man: Far From Home looks to be taking a somewhat different route with the character, but some of the core aspects remain. The suit is a faithful adaptation, complete with the "fishbowl" helmet. It would be interesting if Mysterio actually remains a hero for the majority of the film, as producer Eric Carroll indicated. The comic showed unique battles thanks to Mysterio's tricks. If a future film can recreate these battles, Spider-Man fans have something to look forward to. In the meantime, though Spider-Man may not fight Mysterio, Peter will face the Elementals, creatures who are based on classic Spider-Man characters.
