Universal struck a gold mine in the late 90s when it produced a cinematic mesh of Indiana Jones and the classic horror movie The Mummy. The film The Mummy was a hit around the world and helped make Branden Fraser into an even bigger star than he was blossoming into.

But it’s been a few years since the release of the third film in the franchise — a film that disappointed fans and critics alike. Universal is now in the process of rebooting the franchise and has possibly found a director to take the project forward.

Per a report in Variety:

“Mama” director Andres (Andy) Muschietti is in negotiations to direct “The Mummy” reboot at Universal. Muschietti would replace Len Wiseman, who had to leave the project due to commitments with his TV show “Sleepy Hollow.” Sean Daniel, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing.

Universal is currently rebooting mostly all of it’s classic horror movies and modernizing them, but The Mummy is an unsung early attempt to enact this very strategy back in the late 90s. Since then monster movies have gone more towards blood, guts and gore rather than thrills and chills, and it will be interesting to see how Frankenstein and Dracula Untold will have in store.

Still, it is encouraging news that the reboot of The Mummy is coming along, as fans have been looking for something to erase the bitter taste of the sour third film in the series.
