Director Roar Uthaug has confirmed that they’ve wrapped filming on the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander. Production began back at the beginning of the year, but unlike most big blockbusters has not been prone to set photos or leaks along the way. We have had the chance to see Vikander in action with some set photos, but the best look at Warner Bros.’ reboot came with their officially release images. But, these have really been the only updates on the reboot’s progress fans have received over the last five months.

With the film due to hit theaters in early 2018, production had to come to a close rather soon so the crew had plenty of time to edit the film, complete the necessary reshoots, and then finalize the edit – all before starting the press circuit. As only eight months stand between fans and the reboot, some could have started becoming antsy wanting to know more, which is why it is good to see production finally wrapped.

Uthaug has continued to provide small updates throughout production on his first major Hollywood film and took to Instagram today to announce that they’ve completed principal photography. Much of his closing speech can not be heard thanks to the applause it garnered, but a thanks to his star, Vikander, can be heard as Uthaug closes out production.

Since the production process has not let out in terms of information, the official synopsis and casting – along with the previously mentioned photos – are all we have to go on at this point. This version of Lara Croft will see the young adventurer on the search for her lost father, played by Dominic West, be the catalyst for her true origin. Joining Lara on this mission will be captain Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), but it will be Walton Goggins as the villain that makes their goals difficult to achieve.

Vikander has previously expressed her desire to make this film and her portrayal of Lara new and fresh – or just different than the previous Angelina Jolie films. Modern technology can only help this become a reality with Uthaug’s closing video showing a room full of green screen allowing for massive action set pieces to play out. In the aftermath of Wonder Woman the expectations for Tomb Raider may be higher now more than ever, but it also has to try and break the trend of bad video game movies. Its too early to tell if it will be able to do just that and give Hollywood another female led action franchise, but we should get a better grasp on that possibility soon.
