The fifth Tom Cruise headlined Mission: Impossible movie – a project that reunited Cruise with his Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie – is racing to the finish line faster than originally expected, following its release date having been bumped up by five months. Fortunately, the project has now wrapped its production and begun the proper editing process, with the first trailer due to be released sooner than later.

Mission: Impossible 5, which McQuarrie recently indicated might not be the official title, reunites Cruise with his Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol costar Jeremy Renner, as well as the series’ veterans Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Newcomers this round include Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen) playing an ally for Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his IMF team; Sean Harris (Prometheus) as the film’s main antagonist; and Alec Baldwin, as one of Ethan’s bosses (following in the footsteps of such actors as Anthony Hopkins and Tom Wilkinson from previous installments).

Story details for the fifth Mission: Impossible film are currently under lock and key, but that will change once a trailer has been cut and released. It’s possible the first Mission: Impossible 5 theatrical preview will launch in theaters alongside Furious 7, though as of right now a trailer has yet to be classified. For his part, McQuarrie’s no doubt more concerned with getting through post-production on the tentpole in an efficient manner, as he mentioned via Twitter (see below).

McQuarrie’s previous collaborations with Cruise – including sci-fi action/thriller Edge of Tomorrow and WWII drama/thriller Valkyrie (both co-penned by McQuarrie) – have each had something of a throwback feel, and McQuarrie recently hinted that will remain true for Mission: Impossible 5. Every Mission: Impossible film to date has been directed by a different filmmaker (each adding their own cinematic flavor to the dish), which makes it fitting that McQuarrie is taking his own unique “’90s retro” approach to the property too.

The Mission: Impossible 5 script is credited to McQuarrie as well as Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), Will Staples (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), and Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier (Terminator: Genisys). That lineup reads as a fitting team to work on a thrill-heavy, action set piece-driven franchise like Mission: Impossible; the question that will remains unanswered for now is whether or not the final movie result will be a coherent vision, having been assembled by so many different cooks (and after having to keep to such a tight editing timeline, on top of that).
