Mindhunter Season 2 August 2019 Release Date Revealed
The Mindhunter season 2 release date has been revealed for David Fincher's Netflix serial killer series.Mindhunter season 1 debuted in 2017 and immediately won critical raves for its meticulous period detail and intense drama. Mindhunter season 2 was officially ordered in late 2017, but that second season has been a long time in arriving, no doubt because Fincher is just so focused on getting everything exactly right.
Based on real events outlined in the book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas, season 1 detailed the efforts of a trio of intrepid FBI agents as they picked the brains of various incarcerated murderers to gain insight into the workings of the serial killer mind, inventing the art of profiling in the process. Season 2 is expected to follow much the same formula, as more real life killers are added to the story, including the notorious Charles Manson (played by Damon Herriman, the same actor who plays Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) and David Berkowitz aka. the Son of Sam. Episode directors for Mindhunter season 2 include Hollywood veterans Andrew Dominik and Carl Franklin.
Way back in May, it was revealed that Mindhunter was aiming for an August return, and now it’s been confirmed by Fincher himself on KCRW’s The Treatment podcast with Elvis Mitchell that the show will indeed return on Friday Aug. 16.
In the same interview, Fincher revealed some of his motivation in creating the show, saying that by getting to the reality of what makes psychopathic murderers tick, he “really wanted to drive a stake through the heart of the idea of the serial killer as this glorified comic book supervillain.” The serial killer phenomenon of course remains fascinating to viewers, as was proven earlier this year when Netflix unleashed both the Ted Bundy documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and a Ted Bundy fiction film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, unwittingly touching off an outbreak of hot Ted Bundy memes on social media.
Unlike Zac Efron’s portrayal of Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, there’s nothing very “hot” about the serial killers depicted on Mindhunter. Indeed, Fincher and company come at things from a very grounded and realistic point-of-view, crafting a series that appeals more to devotees of hard boiled police fiction than those who are drawn in by the dark “appeal” of serial killers as depicted in horror movies. It will be fascinating to see where Fincher and company take the Mindhunter story in season 2, as the show’s dogged investigators continue their efforts to hunt down and stop America’s most dangerous predatory killers.
