A brand new teaser for FX’s upcoming Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans M.C. is ready to move on from SAMCRO, as the familiar grim reaper tattoo worn by Jax Teller fades to black and is replaced by an image of the other motorcycle club. The new series has some big shoes to fill, as it’s taking over from one of the the network’s biggest hits ever in an attempt to capitalize on the enduring popularity of SoA, while at the same time establish its own unique identity that builds on the notoriety the Mayans managed to create in the original series.

So far, that hasn’t been an easy road for the new series to travel. As with many pilots, Mayans M.C. has undergone reshoots and some roles have been recast during what was an extensive development and production period. Thankfully, the reshoots and recasting aren’t anything unusual, as even Sons of Anarchy underwent a similar retooling process before it launched all the way back in 2009. And with a cast that includes J.D. Pardo (Revolution), Edward James Olmos, Richard Cabral (Peppermint), and SoA cast member, Emilio Rivera as Marcus Alvarez, all the work seems more than worth it now that FX has put in a season order for the series with plans for it to premiere as part of the network’s fall 2018-19 lineup.

As far as teasers go, the new one is about as forthcoming with actual footage from the series as the ones seen before. Titled ‘Backstory,’ the short video is part pun, part passing of the torch from one series to the next, all while the familiar Spanish rendition of The Rolling Stones' ‘Paint It Black’ plays. If nothing else, the teaser hints the show won’t forget about SAMCRO or the club’s history with Mayans entirely.

What that relationship is going to look like when the show premieres is anyone’s guess. While it’s unlikely fans will see departed members of SAMCRO (unless Kurt Sutter calls in a favor for a flashback), like Jax (Charlie Hunnam) or Clay (Ron Perlman), it’s not outside the realm of possibility for Tig (Kim Coates), Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), Wendy (Drea de Matteo), or even Nero (Jimmy Smits) to make an appearance. Hopefully, Mayans M.C. will take some time to establish all the new characters before dipping its toe back in Sons of Anarchy’s lake, however.

With a September premiere date announced, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing full trailers for the series very soon. These smaller, bite-sized teasers have certainly established a familiar tone for the show, all while capitalizing on the popularity of the series that came before, but now it’s time to see what Mayans M.C. really has to offer.

I have high expectations for this show. Emilio Rivera was fantastic on SoA and with the addition of Edward James Olmos I believe it has high potential. I'm sure Kurt Sutter will not change his very successful formula of violence, sex, drugs, guns and of course motorcycles.
