The series premiere of FX’s Mayans M.C. is right around the corner, but before the club officially hits televisions everywhere, there’s a new “first look” video ready to make some introductions. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff will feature a few familiar faces, like Emilio Rivera’s Marcus Alvarez, but for the most part the series revolves around a new group of characters and the unique bond they share as outlaws on the California/Mexico border.

With all the characters being introduced, this video offers something of a crash course in getting to know not only the new players in the world of the Mayans, but also the individuals playing them. In addition to much of the primary cast showing up to describe what the show’s about and how it’s different and similar from its predecessor, the video also includes interviews with co-creators Kurt Sutter and James Elgin.

There’s not a lot in the way of important new footage from the season, but what the video lacks in that department it more than makes up for with some insight from the actors and creators who have brought the show to life. One term that gets dropped more than once is also one that will be familiar to Sons of Anarchy fans — “family.” As Rivera states, “The Mayans M.C. is all about the family. That’s pretty much first all the time,” which gives a pretty good indication of what viewers can expect when the series hits early next month.

Perhaps the biggest star to appear in the new show is Edward James Olmos, who plays Felipe Reyes, the father of series protagonist Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes (J.D. Pardo). Olmos’s take on Mayans is that the series “deals with the complexity of culture” and “the dark side of life.” Whether or not that will be enough to get Sons fans invested in a new series without Jax Teller remains to be seen, however.

As spinoffs go, Mayans M.C. almost seemed inevitable. Over the years, Sutter has expressed a desire to dig deeper into the outlaw world he built, mentioning a possible prequel series focusing on the exploits of Jax’s father. Perhaps Mayans will be a test case for FX. If this new series performs well viewers might be in store for a lot more motorcycle club madness in the future.

Mayans M.C. premieres Tuesday, September 4 @10pm on FX.
