The last two weeks have been host to an incredible amount of high profile comic book movie news. Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment unveiled 12 movies for 2016-2020, 10 of them with release dates, and Marvel Studios has tapped Robert Downey Jr. to join Captain America 3 in an adaptation of the epic Civil War event from the comics. More recently, they’ve also narrowed down their Doctor Strange casting to Benedict Cumberbatch (deal not yet finished), all the while beginning the marketing campaign for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

There’s the official Avengers 2 trailer that released early last week, new footage that plays tonight during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, our first Avengers 2 set interviews (read: Mark Ruffalo & Robert Downey Jr.) and today at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, Marvel Studios hosted a mysterious event that paid off with a series of huge announcements. Expectations couldn’t have been higher given the news up top and after what DC unveiled last week – especially since Marvel itself came in with a pile of untitled features without release dates. That has all changed.

Kara Warner represented us at the event, firing us updates live as they happened. Check out her recap of the Q&A session with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He was joined at the event by stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and newly announced Chadwick Boseman who will be playing Black Panther (you heard that right!). Directors Joss Whedon, Anthony and Joe Russo, and Scott Derrickson were all in attendance as well for the presentation which also included a video message by Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 writer-director Joss Whedon.

The first big announcement, and the least surprising was for Doctor Strange coming in 2016. We knew this already but it was previously scheduled for July. It’s been moved back to November 4, 2016, taking a release date similar to that of Thor: The Dark World in 2013. Scott Derrickson is still attached to direct but there’s nothing to announce yet on the casting front since no details have been made. The delay could have something to do with making their production schedule work with the potential star (Benedict Cumberbatch).

After unveiling the official logo/title card on Stage, Feige reiterated how Doctor Strange is a passion project for him and the studio. From his description of the character arc and what the film can explore, it sounds very similar to the animated Doctor Strange feature from 2007 – and that’s a good thing. Feige explains that Stephen Strange is an arrogant but brilliant neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in a car collision and as a result loses his career. Strange looks around the world for anything that can help him and encounters The Ancient One who introduces him to the supernatural. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe that means delving into quantum mechanics, string theory, parallel dimensions – things that with training, he can manipulate with his hands and mind.
