Thor's ex-girlfriend restarts the mythical warrior women line in a new series launching in July.

After finding a new audience in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Entertainment has announced a new solo comic book series for Valkyrie — but the hero at the center of the new series may not be exactly who fans are expecting to see after the onscreen debut of Tessa Thompson’s alter-ego.

The new series, slated to launch this summer, spins out of Marvel’s current War of the Realms storyline, which has killed off all existing Valkyrie and placed Jane Foster — Thor’s former girlfriend and someone who, for a number of years, took over the role of Thor in the absence of the original male version of the character — in the position of having to take up the mantle and rebuild the line of warrior women anew.

“There's a line in Valkyrie No. 1: ‘Thor is a god, Valkyrie is a job,’” co-writer Al Ewing told Marvel.com. “Jane knows how to be Thor, but the role of Valkyrie — the warrior who fights for the living and the dead, and stands between both — is a very different beast. It's a sacred task, and brings additional abilities — and responsibilities — of its own. As the first of a new generation of Valkyries, Jane has to decide for herself what that task involves, and that's a big part of what we'll be exploring in this series. If you're reading this, you know who Valkyrie is, but what she is is one of the big philosophical underpinnings of the book.”

Ewing will co-write the series with Thor writer Jason Aaron, with art coming from Cafu. Covers for the series will come from Mahmud Asrar and Matt Wilson. (See above for the first issue’s cover.)

Jane Foster: Valkyrie is set to debut in July.
