Marvel's civil war 2 pits iron man against captain marvel

Marvel is finally shedding more light on their upcoming Civil War 2 comic and the latest conflict that will split the Marvel Universe down the middle. According to The New York Daily News, this new story will center around a clash between Iron Man and Captain Marvel and a philosophical debate over personal accountability.

Civil War 2 opens with the debut of a mysterious new superhuman figure that has the power to predict the future with near perfect accuracy, sparking a Minority Report-esque conflict. “A mysterious new Marvel character comes to the attention of the world, one who has the power to calculate the outcome of future events with a high degree of accuracy,” reads Marvel's official synopsis. “This predictive power divides the Marvel heroes on how best to capitalize on this aggregated information, with Captain Marvel leading the charge to profile future crimes and attacks before they occur, and Iron Man adopting the position that the punishment cannot come before the crime.”



This is a significant change from the original 2006 Civil War crossover, where the creation of the Superhuman Registration Act drove a rift between Iron Man and Captain America. However, it appears that Marvel is still trying to tell a story steeped in real-world politics and conflicts. The NY Daily News was present at a recent Marvel editorial summit, where writer Brian Michael Bendis explained to his peers, “People’s personal accountability is the theme of this one. From the way cops are acting on camera, to the way people talk to each other online.”

While we certainly like the idea of the Avengers beating up Internet trolls, it appears Civil War 2 will quickly be taking a dark turn. The conflict will escalate as one Marvel hero is tragically killed by another. The NY Daily News reports that both Spider-Man and Human Torch were name-dropped during the lengthy discussion over which hero to sacrifice, though apparently Bendis and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso settled on another mystery character.


Civil War 2 was first teased last October when Diamond Comics released a promotional catalog to retailers. Last month we learned that the creative team behind Invincible Iron Man, Bendis and artist David Marquez, are collaborating on the mini-series. No firm release date has been given for Civil War 2 #1, but we imagine it'll be timed close to the May 6, 2016 theatrical release of Captain America: Civil War.
