You didn't think Marvel was going to let Spider-Man get away with only doing one movie in the MCU, right? It took decades for Marvel Studios to strike a deal with Sony to share the webslinger in the ongoing series of Marvel movies. After making his debut in Captain America: Civil War, and preparing to carry Spider-Man: Homecoming next summer, Tom Holland now says that his Spidey already is looking ahead to a sequel, confirming:

My next project, I can't tell you about, but we've just finished Spider-Man and we're talking about the second one and who the villain is going to be and where we're going.

Tom Holland was at the after party in New York City for The Lost City of Z, where he opened up to WWD.com about the progress of a second Spider-Man movie. Though, what would they call this one? We already have a Spider-Man 2 (with Tobey Maguire) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (with Andrew Garfield). I can't see Marvel maintaining the Homecoming subtitle for the sequel, so maybe it will change to reflect where Peter Parker (Holland) is in his high school career? There was a rumor a while back that each Spider-Man movie made in the MCU would follow another year of Peter's high school, so I guess that's possible, if that rumor turns out to be accurate.

There's also the possibility that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will appear in OTHER Marvel movies, so we're not 100% sure when this film would come out. Marvel Studios has mapped out their plans through 2020, with standalone movies for Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp on the docket. There also are two Avengers movies coming, and Spidey could factor into any of those. But Marvel has shown that they are not above shuffling the decks if room needs to be made for a sequel... as they did when Ant-Man needed a follow up, so a 2018 release window was created in the MCU to accommodate.

That concludes Phase Three, which will end in 2019. Does this mean that a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming would drop in 2020, and be part of Marvel's Phase Four? It's possible, though right now, there are only two MCU movies down for 2019, with Captain Marvel opening in March 2019, and a fourth Avengers movie opening in May 2019. Marvel's getting to the point where three movies a year is becoming the norm, so Spidey could get a July, August or November release in 2019. Time will tell.

Now, about that villain. I kind of love that Tom Holland drops that they're already discussing which villain will be used for a sequel. This likely suggests that the villain will be hinted at in this first movie, or that actions from the plot of Homecoming could lead to the birth of a villain in the sequel. Or, Marvel and Sony might just stick with the "No villains from previous Spidey movies" policy, and bring in someone like Kraven the Hunter. Too bad Joe Manganiello jumped to DC already. He'd be a perfect Kraven.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7, 2017. We know that the main villains will be The Vulture (played by Michael Keaton) and The Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), and that Tony Stark and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will have a significant role. Who would you like to see as a villain in Tom Holland's Spider-Man sequel? Weigh in below.
