Knightfall is returning for a second season with the addition of Mark Hamill to the cast. Aaron Helbing, known best for his work on CW’s The Flash and Spartacus: War of the Damned will be the showrunner and executive producer. The scripted drama premiered on the History channel in December of 2017. The first season garnered strong ratings as, according to Nielsen and History, it was the number 3 new show on cable.

Knightfall stars Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey) as Landry du Lauzon, a fictional member of the Knights Templar who fought in the Crusades. The show delves into the mysterious Knights Templar, exploring the lives of its warriors and their sworn oath to protect religious relics. The Templars amassed a large amount of power and wealth through their battles in the Holy Land. Knightfall will explore the politics of the Order while tackling their eventual fall and persecution at the order of King Philip IV of France.

As announced by History, Hamill will be a member of the Knights Templar, Talus, a battle-hardened knight and veteran of the Crusades. He survived captivity in the Holy Land for 10 years and is now tasked with training new initiates to the Order. Along with Hamill, Tom Forbes (The Bastard Executioner, Wolf Hall) is also joining the cast for season 2. He will play the violent and unpredictable Prince Louis, the son of King Philip and heir to the throne. Rounding out the new additions to the cast is Genevieve Gaunt (The Royals). She will play Isabella, the daughter of King Philip, who would go on to be known as the "she-wolf of France."

Hamill is best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. After that formative role he would go on to become a prolific voice actor. Over his long career he portrayed a wide variety of characters in film, TV, video games and anime. One of his most famous roles was as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series as well as its later spinoffs, films and video games. He won a BAFTA for British Academy Video Games Award for Performer for voicing the Joker in Batman: Arkham City. He will voice two characters in the seventh season of The Venture Bros. Next year he will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars IX.

Hamill has gone from playing a Jedi Knight to a Knight Templar, but it’s not quite the leap it seems. They’re both warrior monks of a sorts and the focus on war should be no stranger to someone who has spent so much time immersed in the world of Star Wars. The training Hamill gained while filming the Star Wars movies will prove useful for this new role. He also has experience playing battle-hardened characters as seen by his most recent portrayal of Skywalker in The Last Jedi. Hamill will bring an air of gravitas that commands respect to Talus. Season 2 of Knightfall looks to build on the foundation of the first season while opening up the world with the addition of these new characters.
