Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie will star in the WWII thriller Ruin, the latest film from Assassin’s Creed director Justin Kurzel. Robbie continues to line up intriguing film projects coming off her first career nomination, for her role as Tonya Harding in last year’s biopic I, Tonya. Most intriguingly, Robbie is set to play Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded 1969-set drama Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. A first-look image of Robbie as Tate was recently posted to Instagram.

Robbie of course is also set to return as her Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn in the female-centered DCEU team-up movie Birds of Prey. There have also been reports of Quinn possibly appearing in Gotham City Sirens, as well as a Harley/Joker movie, but the status of those projects is unknown at this time. Suicide Squad 2 also appears to be on indefinite hold after being pushed back multiple times. In addition to her upcoming return as Harley Quinn, Robbie will also tackle the role of Maid Marian in the Robin Hood re-imagining Marian.

Variety reports that Robbie has now added another project to her busy schedule, hopping aboard the WWII thriller Ruin. Assassin’s Creed helmer Justin Kurzel will direct the film from a Black List script by Ryan and Matthew Firpo, the team recently hired by Marvel Studios to pen an Eternals movie. Red Sparrow’s Matthias Schoenaerts will co-star alongside Robbie. Shooting is expected to begin in Prague in Spring 2019.

Robbie’s Ruin character is described as a Holocaust survivor living amid the ruins of post-WWII Germany whose quest for revenge forces her to enter into an unlikely alliance with a former SS captain, played by Schoenaerts. The two join forces to track down and kill the surviving members of Schoenaerts’ Nazi death squad. Robbie has prior experience with WWII-set period films thanks to her role in the 2015 drama Suite Française.

Period films indeed are becoming something of a Robbie specialty now, after her turn as Queen Elizabeth alongside Saoirse Ronan in Mary Queen of Scots. Robbie is also set to star in a more contemporary story, playing the role of fictional Fox News producer Kayla Pospisil alongside Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman in Fair and Balanced, a film about the Roger Ailes sexual harassment scandal.

It remains to be seen if any of Robbie’s upcoming prestige roles will garner her another shot at an Oscar. The first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots shows Robbie again transforming herself as she did for I, Tonya, and perhaps this latest chameleon move will get Robbie in the Oscar race. It is of course unlikely that Birds of Prey will find itself in Oscar talk when it finally arrives. As for Ruin, the movie could be Oscar bait given its WWII setting and Nazi hunting subject matter. When it comes to creating Oscar buzz, playing a Holocaust survivor is usually an effective move.
