The Mandalorian Season 3 Reportedly Starts Filming In April

A new production report lists an April 5 start date in Los Angeles for shooting on The Mandalorian season 3, Disney+'s hit Star Wars show. Starring Pedro Pascal as the title character, Giancarlo Esposito as archvillain Moff Gideon, and a host of recurring stars, The Mandalorian quickly became one of the most popular shows on TV following its 2019 debut, winning a number of Emmys to boot.

The Mandalorian season 2 expanded on the Star Wars lore in the show, introducing a number of characters from previous Star Wars movies and TV shows, including Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), and Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff). Both Boba Fett and Ahsoka's appearances set up their own spinoff shows, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka respectively, which will both be streamed on Disney+. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian season 2's finale took the show in a new direction with Baby Yoda, a central driving force in the narrative so far. He was taken by none other than Luke Skywalker for Jedi training, leaving season 3's story possibilities wide open.

Now, Herb Scribner has noticed a new production listing for The Mandalorian season 3 on Production List, which collates all of the currently active and planned movie and TV productions. Shared via Twitter, the production listing confirms season 3 will start filming on April 5 and will roll cameras in Los Angeles. That's a sign the production will continue to use the virtual techniques from the first two seasons, helping the production to remain COVID-safe without the need to travel anywhere besides the studio.

The shooting date, if accurate, suggests The Mandalorian season 3 will aim to drop some time early in 2022, a shift from seasons 1 and 2, which were both released in early winter 2019 and 2020 respectively. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed The Book of Boba Fett will shoot first and debut in the release slot previously used by The Mandalorian, meaning Star Wars fans will still get their fill over the winter. Just how the two shows will connect, beyond what's been seen in The Mandalorian season 2, remains to be seen, but it's clear Disney is planning some crossover, similar to the Marvel TV shows on Disney+.

As for the plot of The Mandalorian season 3, as mentioned before, with Baby Yoda now safely with Luke Skywalker, its seems Din Djarin will be heading on new adventures, though he's undoubtedly going to cross paths with Moff Gideon again. Fans will be disappointed to know Mando may spend more of season 3 with his helmet off, though star Pedro Pascal has teased it's for good reason, hinting The Mandalorian will take the character in an entirely new direction in season 3.
