With HBO’s Game of Thrones currently on hiatus before its final series, is former star Jason Momoa set for a glorious comeback as Khal Drogo in Season 8?

As the cast of the show gathers in Belfast for table reads ahead of filming, the great and the good of acting talent are preparing to round off one of TV’s best-loved shows. We already know that the Night’s Watch will be back, and while stars like Ellie Kendrick look to be out of the final season, Momoa’s social media activity puts him in a prime place to reprise his role as the long-dead Dothraki leader.

Taking to Instagram, the Justice League star shared snaps of himself in Belfast among Thrones alumni like Kit Harington, Kristofer Hivju, and Liam Cunningham.

The post claims that he was only in Belfast for 24 hours, but it could all just be a ruse to keep Drogo’s return a little more hush. That being said, if showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted Momoa for a brief flashback alongside Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen, his flying visit could’ve been just long enough to sneak in a cameo.

Heading back to Season 1 of the ice and fire saga, Drogo famously lead the Dothraki horde and was given Dany as a gift to shore up the Targaryen claim to the Iron Thrones. After a rocky start, Drogo and Daenerys fell in love until fate tore them apart. With Drogo injured in battle, the wicked Mirri Maz Duur cursed him and left him in a vegetative state. Given no other option, Danerys was forced to smother her husband to put him out of his misery. Since then, Momoa has clearly kept up with the show – frequently sharing posts about Game of Thrones – and rumors of his possible return have circulated ever since.

As one of the most popular characters to grace Thrones‘ grisly history, Momoa’s turn as Khal Drogo arguably shaped Daenerys into the ruler that she is today. It would be a fitting way to end her story by bringing back the love of her life in some way, shape, or form. Quite how or why a return or flashback would fit into the final run of episodes remains to be seen, but Momoa would be a major addition to the final season’s cast.

With only six episodes of the fantasy epic left, expect Benioff and Weiss to pull out all the stops for the show’s swansong, and a Khal Drogo appearance would certainly be a talking point. However, whether in flashback or some sort of miraculous resurrection, we’re not sure how Drogo would feel about Danerys’ new love interest as Jon Snow’s complicated relationship with his aunt sets the boat rocking (again) in Season 8.
