Before the X-Men re-team to battle their greatest threat yet in next summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, moviegoers will meet one of Marvel Comic’ most popular and unique characters in Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds gets a second chance at playing the wise-cracking antihero after first playing Wilson as a supporting character in 2009′s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The standalone Deadpool adventure takes place in the X-Men movie universe but ignores that awkward intro but brings back Reynolds and teams him with director Tim Miller.

A Deadpool screenplay was commissioned shortly after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), and shortly thereafter Miller – who comes from an animation and special effects background – was attached to direct. For years, there was no movement on the project until last summer, someone smartly leaked online a test reel Miller and Reynolds put together for Twentieth Century Fox.

It won over the studio as much as it did fans, and Fox, who are finally taking their Marvel properties seriously, jumped on the opportunity, practically rushing Deadpool into production. Principal photography on Deadpool begins in late March in Vancouver and the film will open in theaters exactly one year from today.

In the meantime, Reynolds and Miller are working hard on “tests,” and we can only image that has to do with finding the perfect costume that works for Reynolds and the action-heavy requirements of the film, and figuring out how to shoot the project on a much lower budget than traditional X-Men projects.

Reminding fans that we’re only one year away from Deadpool, Reynolds tweeted the following behind-the-scenes photo which depicts the crew working away on the Deadpool movie costume which we know is being designed to honor the red and black costumes from Marvel Comics.

Fantastic Four opens August 7th, 2015, Deadpool on February 12, 2016, X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016, Gambit on October 7 2016, Wolverine 3 (not the official title) on March 3rd, 2017, Fantastic Four 2 on July 14th, 2017, and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13th, 2018.
