Luke Wilson offers a hopeful update on the status of the long-awaited Legally Blonde 3. The first film in the franchise was released back in 2001, earning mostly positive reviews and performing well at the box office. Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a sorority queen who decides to follow her passion and go to law school. A sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, was released in 2003. It was met with mostly negative reviews but similar box office numbers. Wilson appeared in both films as Emmett, Elle's love interest.

Legally Blonde 3 was first announced in 2018, with The Office star Mindy Kaling and Parks & Recreation writer Dan Goor attached to write the script in 2020. Though the film was set for a spring 2022 release at one point, that's since come and gone with no new date set. In March 2022, Kaling revealed that the script has been challenging to write and that they're working on getting it right before moving forward. Witherspoon herself recently spoke about the project, saying they're taking inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick for Legally Blonde 3, since both involve the return of older franchises.

In a recent interview on Good Morning America (via EW), Wilson offers his own hopeful update on the progress of Legally Blonde 3, revealing that he and other core cast members from the original film met over Zoom last summer. Check out Wilson's full comment below:

I think I know as much as you all, but we did have a Zoom-call get-together last summer where the whole cast — Jennifer [Coolidge], Matthew [Davis], Selma [Blair] — all got together and talked, so it really was great to see everybody. Reese is such a sharp individual, I think she's probably just waiting for the script to be right and the time to be right. It'll be really fun to make another movie.

With the last film in the main Legally Blonde franchise having been released nearly 20 years ago, there's understandably a lot of pressure to get the script right for the upcoming installment. After all, since so much time has elapsed since Legally Blonde 2, it's likely that audiences won't be seeing exactly the same version of Elle and Emmett that were featured in the first two films. Legally Blonde 2 ends with Elle and Emmett getting married before Elle looks at the White House and winks, certainly suggesting that the third film could involve a presidential campaign.

It's still unclear how prominently Wilson will feature in Legally Blonde 3, but considering Emmett's important role in the first two films, many viewers would likely take issue with the character being put on the sidelines. While Elle and Emmett were certainly very happy at the end of Legally Blonde 2, it remains to be seen whether the two will still be together in the long-awaited sequel. It will likely be a while before Legally Blonde 3 hits theaters or streaming, but, if Wilson's comment is anything to go by, it'll be worth the wait.
