Jodie Foster runs a hospital for criminals in the first trailer for Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce’s sci-fi thriller, Hotel Artemis. The two time Oscar-winner Foster has spent most of her time behind the camera in the five years since her last feature film starring role, in Neill Blomkamp’s 2013 sci-fi feature Elysium. In addition to directing the George Clooney headlined social satire/thriller Money Monster, Foster has called the shots on episodes of Netflix series House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Black Mirror over that period of time. Foster also raised some eyebrows late last year, when she accused superhero tentpoles of “ruining” the filmgoing habits of Americans.

Hotel Artemis stars Foster as “Nurse”, a strictly by-the-rules caretaker who runs a secret members-only hospital for criminals in riot-plagued Los Angeles in the year 2028. Sterling K. Brown costars as Waikiki, a robber who shows up at Hotel Artemis injured alongside his crew one night, following what was otherwise a successful job. However, it turns out that Waikiki took something that he wasn’t supposed to: a portable vault that’s disguised as a pen and is worth about $18 million. Now, the owner of said vault is coming to collect, and they’re not so hot on abiding by the rules that “Nurse” has put in place to maintain order in her hospital.

Joining Foster and Brown in the Hotel Artemis cast are Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnarok), Charlie Day (Pacific Rim Uprising), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), and Jenny Slate (Gifted). Pearce makes his feature length directing debut with the film, which is based on an original story and screenplay that he wrote. In addition to cowriting Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, Pearce wrote and directed that Marvel Cinematic Universe film’s One-Shot video, All Hail the King. He also cowrote Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and penned the story for the LEGO Movie spinoff The Billion Brick Race, which lost director Jorge R. Gutiérrez earlier this year. Pearce also had a hand in writing the perennially delayed Sherlock Holmes 3 for Robert Downey Jr. and a now cancelled Ghostbusters spinoff that would have starred Channing Tatum, potentially opposite Chris Pratt.

Based on the trailer, Hotel Artemis has the same dark sense of humor as Iron Man 3 and is more of a satirical sci-fi action/comedy than thriller. The film’s characters are similar offbeat, especially Goldblum as an especially Goldblum-y crime boss and Bautista as Everest, a “health care professional” who’s more than happy to beat the snot out of any disrespectful guests at the eponymous hospital. Hotel Artemis will serve as quirky counter-programming to the star studded Ocean’s Eleven franchise spinoff Ocean’s 8 during its opening weekend at the domestic box office later this year.

Hotel Artemis opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, June 8.
