There's a reason why iconic superheroes have a tendency to endure for decades. Sure, the action is cool and the superpowers are always fascinating, but superheroes stay with us because they represent the absolute best of humanity. Of those heroes, few epitomize the optimism and inherent goodness of our culture more than Diana Prince a.k.a Wonder Woman. Now it seems that, 75 years after her introduction to DC Comics, Wonder Woman has received official recognition from the United Nations.

A new report from The Los Angeles Times indicates that Wonder Woman will soon have a major honor bestowed upon her. The United Nations has decided to make the legendary superhero an honorary ambassador, and actresses Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot will make appearances to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place on October 21 at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City, and it will coincide with the 75th anniversary of the iconic Amazonian princess. The event is intended to launch the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goal No. 5, which is a worldwide initiative with the mission of empowering women all around the globe.

Although Wonder Woman has existed for decades in the realm of pop culture, she has only recently experienced a major surge in popularity. Much of this has to do with the fact that she finally made her first modern live-action appearance in Batman VvSuperman: Dawn of Justice, and the Wonder Woman solo movie will hit theaters next year -- the first ever female fronted superhero movie.

In addition to the renewed interest in Wonder Woman stories, the story behind Wonder Woman's creation has also received quite a bit of attention in recent weeks. As we previously reported, Sony is currently working on a biopic for Wonder Woman's creator, Dr. William Moulton Marston. The film will center on Marston's polyamorous relationship with his wife Elizabeth Marston as well as Olivia Byrne, and show how their progressive love affair led to the creation of one of DC's most enduring figures. It's only fitting that one of the most progressive superheroes has an equally progressive origin story.

We will keep you up to date with any and all relevant Wonder Woman news as more information becomes available to us. The Wonder Woman solo movie will hit theaters on June 2, 2017. Diana Prince is one of the most powerful and empowering fictional characters of all time, and we couldn't be happier to learn about this upcoming honor.
