The past few days have been exciting for X-Men fans, as new nuggets of information are starting to emerge about Logan. Hugh Jackman’s third solo vehicle in the franchise recently got its first poster, and possible plot details were also revealed. Additionally, viewers got their first look at Patrick Stewart’s Professor X from the new movie, with the former X-Men leader looking very worse for wear. Jackman has promised more content is on the horizon, and the hope is a teaser trailer makes its way online.

As fans wait for some footage, they have to make do with still images. One of the many reasons people are excited for Logan is the fact that it is R-rated, meaning that for the first time on-screen, Wolverine will be unleashed in full, unrestricted berserker mode. The character’s more violent tendencies should be in full effect in Logan, and if the latest photo is any indication, the famous mutant won’t be taking any prisoners.

On the official Logan Instagram account, a picture of a severed arm grasping a gun was posted. Captioned with just the word “Aftermath,” it most likely depicts a villain henchmen who made the unfortunate mistake of getting in Wolverine’s way during an action sequence. You can check it out below:

It’s difficult to make out due to the black and white nature of the photo, but a trail of blood is visible on the ground, another indication that Logan will be more gruesome and grisly than previous installments. This is appropriate given the tone Mangold and company are striving for, which is said to be in the vein of a “violent Western.” Wolverine is one of the comic book characters best suited for an R-rated adaptation, and though the PG-13 takes have been well-received by millions of moviegoers, Logan has the potential to be something very special. Since this will mark the final time Jackman portrays his iconic role, it’s great to see Fox pulling out all the stops to craft something “very different.”

The pictures released thus far have certainly ramped up anticipation, hinting at a dark and gritty character drama that pushes Wolverine and Professor X to their ultimate limits. X-Men has been through a series of ups and downs since the franchise started back in 2000, and the hope is that Logan can live up to its potential and be one of the stronger efforts. Jackman has remained as enthusiastic as every throughout the process, and if this is to be his last outing, he’ll want to end his tenure with a bang. Fox found a great deal of success with the R-rated Deadpool, so ideally Logan can repeat that.

Logan opens in U.S. theaters on March 3, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017, March 2, 2018, and June 29, 2018. Deadpool 2, Gambit, New Mutants and X-Force are currently in development.
