Here's everything we know about Lethal Weapon 5, from release information to story details. The beloved action/buddy cop franchise follows the exploits of Los Angeles detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The first movie was released in 1987, and three more followed at various intervals, with Lethal Weapon 4 hitting screens in 1998. That's right, Lethal Weapon 5 is more than twenty years in the making.

Lethal Weapon 5 is one of those sequels that seems to be routinely put on the table, only to be taken off again. In 2018, it came out that Richard Donner, who directed the other four installments, was ready to make one last entry in the series, proclaiming that it would be dark and called Lethal Finale. Then nothing much happened.

Details about Lethal Weapon 5 being once again resurrected come from Dan Lin, who produced the Lethal Weapon TV series, which ran for three seasons on FOX. He spoke about it, after first knocking on wood so as not to jinx it, that Lethal Weapon 5 was finally happening.

Lethal Weapon 5 Cast And Crew

Richard Donner is apparently still on board to direct Lethal Weapon 5. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are also set to come back as the swashbuckling Riggs and Murtaugh. No word yet, however, if the movie's other famous regulars will return.

It might be a challenge to get back Joe Pesci, who brought the comic relief as wannabe cop Leo Getz. He officially retired from acting after Lethal Weapon 4, only returning to film Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. Rene Russo, Riggs' love interest and mother of his child, might be up for it. She's still very actively taking roles, including as Frigga in the Marvel films Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Endgame. Finally, working Chris Rock back into the story as Butters, Murtaugh's son-in-law, would be fun.

Lethal Weapon 5 Release Date

Dan Lin gave no details about when we should expect Lethal Weapon 5. He did say that he's been trying to get it made for "several years." There is a script that is undergoing revisions by Jez Butterworth, who wrote the Tom Cruise vehicle Edge Of Tomorrow and Black Mass, which starred Johnny Depp. Once the script is finalized and production starts, we'll know more about when to expect Lethal Weapon 5 in theaters.

Lethal Weapon 5 Story Details

Butterworth's script for Lethal Weapon 5 was described by Dan Lin as very personal to Richard Donner and the cast. Other than that, not much is known.

By the end of Lethal Weapon 4, Riggs had fathered a son, and Murtaugh became grandfather to a baby girl. Given the twenty-year gap since that movie, it seems like a no-brainer to have Lethal Weapon 5 usher in those now-adult offspring as the new Riggs and Murtaugh, because after all this time the original Murtaugh genuinely is "too old for this s***," as he so often said.
