Season 2 of FX’s Legion will explore even more personalities that are in David’s head. The show’s first season brought the titular mutant from the X-Men universe to vivid life on the small screen, taking us inside the mind of a man who grew up believing he was incurably insane. The complicated world of creepy, unreliable memories and mysterious figures battling for dominance inside our hero David’s (Dan Stevens) head was enough to drive any person insane, but with the help of mutants Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller) and Dr. Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), David eventually realized he was a man of great power tormented by a parasitic entity.

The season finale saw David finally free of the psychic villain known as the Shadow King, but that doesn’t mean the end of his fractured personality. We already met a British version of David that helped talk him out of danger, and despite David’s new level of control over his psyche and powers, we could see some other mental manifestations in season 2.

In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con with ComicBook, actor Stevens revealed that things will definitely still be complicated for David during season 2 of Legion.

“We haven’t even really scratched the surface of the number of characters or entities that are contained within Legion. The Shadow King was obviously one of them and a large part. But there’s a lot more going on and anyone who knows the comics knows the scope of the world in which its set. So yeah, there’s a lot more to dig out of his head.”

We’re definitely only at the very beginning of understanding the types of telekinetic and other psionic powers David is capable of. In the original Marvel comics, each power was attached to a separate personality inside the mutant Legion’s head, and he repeatedly absorbed the astral selves of those around him — as well as those mutants’ powers. Creator and showrunner Noah Hawley has said the series isn’t tied to the comic book storylines, but we may see “ideas or characters or images that are familiar” to fans of the source material.

Considering we’ve already seen many of the other main characters inside David’s head, often due to their own mutant powers more than his, it’s likely we’ll see that again in season 2. The question will be whether we’ll meet other versions of David inside his mind, or more entities that have hitched along for a ride either willingly or unwillingly. Legion often questioned the nature of sanity, so while David is definitely a mutant with special powers, that doesn’t necessarily exclude the fact that he may also have more “conventional” mental disorders.

After being ejected from David’s brain, the Shadow King took over the consciousness of Oliver Bird (Jemaine Clement) and seemed ready to ride off into the sunset for new evil adventures with Lenny (Aubrey Plaza). Recent news about Legion season 2 confirms it isn’t he last we’ve seen of the entity also known as Amahl Farouk, who may have gone from one psychic predicament to another. It will be exciting to see if David has another run-in with Farouk, and if he’ll call on any other different personalities in his brain to help defeat his enemy once again.

Still deciding if I'm going to continue with this show next year... I guess I will... but it is a very strange show.
