The Legend of Korra took the not so obvious route by changing up the dynamics of who the Avatar’s adversary will be. Creators DiMartino and Konietzko may have said that Kuvira will be the primary opposition, yet ‘Battle of Zaofu’ proved otherwise with an unexpected twist.

Korra’s greatest enemy this season will be the inner-demon that is still haunting her, even after she supposedly removed all of the poison from her body. If her soul is cleansed, then what is ailing our troubled heroine?

First of all, it was painful watching Korra getting pummeled by Kuvira. No offense to the lovely strong-willed earth bender, but she couldn’t hold a candle to Zaheer, Ozai, or even Azula. Well, this is all a matter of opinion of course, since a cage-match fight to the death between all the super villains is unlikely. Who do you think would win?

However this season plays out, Korra is going to have to do some more soul-searching before she can beat anyone. Jinora and Meelo were impressive this week, showcasing their quick maturation for such young children. And Ikki, who sometimes feels like the forgotten child, has done well in tough situations and is a wonderfully expressive painter as well. On the other hand, Meelo is perhaps too realistic for Zaofu’s artistic tastes.

Varrick once again nearly stole the show as he and Bolin find a way to escape the clutches of Kuvira’s minions. The crazed scientist is getting the most attention he’s ever had and is quickly becoming a favorite among fans. Teaming him up with Bolin was a brilliant move, as the two offer the best comedic moments each week. Sadly, their attempts at sabotaging Kuvira’s plan to harness the spirit-vines into a super weapon may have been in vain, since Zhu Li is offering her assistance. Many of you think she’s still on Varrick’s side, quietly maneuvering her way up Kuvira’s ladder. Only time will tell.

After a strong appearance in last week’s episode, Asami’s presence was missed. It will be interesting to see if her father (Hiroshi Sato) will play a role in the season’s upcoming events. Mako’s absence has also been keenly felt. As a valuable member of Team Avatar, he can’t stay off screen for much longer.

Looking ahead, there are more questions than answers. Korra has already sought the help of Toph in the swamp, so who will she turn to next? This may sound twisted, but what about Zaheer? The charismatic leader was able to discipline his mind so well that he literally flew in last season’s finale. He is so against tyrannical dictators like Kuvira, so might he be willing to help Korra regain her mojo? Maybe that’s too much, but where else can she go?

Another scenario that many of us have been waiting for would involve a reunion with the original team. Korra may need the help of Katara, Toph, and Zuko if she wants to stand a chance against Kuvira. This job is too big for one person.

Korra lost this battle, but surely she won’t lose the war. Keep watching to see how it will all play out.

The Legend of Korra continues next Friday on various streaming services.
