Zack Snyder has revealed Warner Bros. has plans to develop a Wonder Woman sequel. Anticipation is sky high for director Patty Jenkins’ DC Extended Universe installment, which many are hoping will rejuvenate the franchise after a trio of divisive films. Following an early screening of the movie, positive reactions started to pop up on social media, and the box office projections indicate it will be a sizable commercial hit due to the character’s popularity and fan demand to see Diana Prince on the big screen. Right now, all signs are pointing to Wonder Woman being the bona fide success story the DCEU needs right now.

If things go as well as people hope, talk of a followup will be inevitable. Last month at WonderCon, DC’s Geoff Johns could not confirm a Wonder Woman 2 as part of the property’s ever-evolving slate of projects, but Man of Steel and Batman V Superman helmsman Snyder had no such qualms and announced this summer’s tentpole will be getting a sequel at some point down the road.

According to Arthur Wong, Snyder broke the news while on the Wonder Woman red carpet in Shanghai. Obviously, there weren’t many other details beyond the fact a second solo film for Diana is in the cards, but it’s nevertheless exciting for viewers happy to see the Amazonian warrior become a key part of the brand’s future. There’s no word yet on when Wonder Woman 2 could make its way to theaters, as it just adds another wrinkle to the DCEU. WB has several DC films in various stages of development, including Joss Whedon’s Batgirl and David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens, and their release schedule beyond 2018’s Aquaman is a bit of a question mark. The studio also has The Batman, a Flash standalone, and Man of Steel 2 coming through the pipeline – not to mention a Black Adam solo film for Dwayne Johnson before he plays the antagonist in Shazam! Depending on how things shake out, the Wonder Woman sequel could be put on the fast track or come out a few years from now. Hopefully soon WB iron outs their line-up (maybe at San Diego Comic-Con 2017), since a lot has changed since they made their initial announcements back in 2014.

As for the creative team of Wonder Woman 2, it would be nice if Jenkins returned to call the shots. The director has already talked about her sequel plans, teasing that there are “many, many things” she can do with the character. Though Jenkins never helmed a big-budget tentpole until now, all of the Wonder Woman footage suggests she was not out of her element and delivered a thrilling origin story punctuated by great action sequences. Jenkins seems to have enjoyed her time working with WB and DC, so unless something else comes up between now and then, she’ll probably be the studio’s first choice for the next Wonder Woman film.
