BBC America renews Killing Eve for season 3. Based on Luke Jennings's Codename Villanelle novella series, the drama stars Sandra Oh, who earned a Prime Emmy Award nomination for her season 1 performance. Killing Eve season 2 premiered on April 7.

On Killing Eve, Oh portrays Eve Polastri, an MI5 agent tracking down an assassin named Oksana Astankova aka Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Killing Eve season 1 premiered in April 2018 and concluded its initial eight-episode run last May. Filmmaker Damon Thomas (Penny Dreadful) directed the final three episodes of Killing Eve season 1, and also directed the Killing Eve season 2 premiere. In supporting roles, Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter’s Petunia Dursley) portrays the head of Russia’s MI6, while Darren Boyd, Owen McDonnell, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste also appear in the BBC America series.

BBC America officially announced Killing Eve’s season 3 renewal. The third installment will feature Suzanne Heathcote (Fear the Walking Dead) as the head writer, this coming after Phoebe Waller-Bridge served as the lead writer for Killing Eve season 1 and Emerald Fennell handled the same duties for Killing Eve season 2. While most TV dramas aren’t typically renewed in the days after airing a new season premiere, Killing Eve’s cultural buzz and high ratings suggest that fans will continue to tune in. In addition, Killing Eve recently earned more accolades by landing 14 nominations for the BAFTA TV Awardsm a somewhat controversial development as the “creative control” for eligible shows must “reside” within the UK.

For Oh, Killing Eve’s season 3 renewal comes five years after her final appearance on the iconic ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. From 2005 to 2014, Oh starred in 220 episodes of the series as Dr. Cristina Yang, a character created by Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder). Oh was previously married to film director Alexander Payne and starred in his acclaimed 2004 film Sideways. Prior to that, Oh portrayed Rita Wu on the HBO series Arliss. Throughout her career, Oh has received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and she’s the first woman of Asian descent to win two Golden Globe Awards.

Last November, Killing Eve was added to to Hulu’s library, so fans and curious streamers have easy access to the series. Part of Oh’s appeal is that she can effectively balance drama and comedy, a testament to her extensive career experience dating back three decades. Just last January, Oh co-hosted the Golden Globes Awards with Andy Samberg, and she hosted Saturday Night Live last month. Now that Killing Eve has been renewed once again, Oh will further strengthen her legacy and create more opportunities for Asian women.

Killing Eve airs Sundays at 8pm ET on BBC America and AMC.
