Moviegoers may have to wait a few more years for Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and company to suit up for Zack Snyder’s big-screen Justice League. In the meantime, fans still have plenty of opportunity to see DC’s most famous heroes unite on the small screen.

For years, DC animated films have chronicled the various adventures of the Justice League, with Justice League: War serving as the most recent direct-to-video release focusing on the team (read our review). That film teased a follow-up which would turn its attention to Aquaman, and the resulting release, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, will now be released later this month.

Two new clips from the film have landed online (see above and below). Both give fans a clear idea of what to expect from the latest animated adventure. The first one highlights a comic moment featuring Green Lantern (voiced by Nathan Fillion) and the Flash (voiced by Christopher Gorham), and the second clip places more emphasis on the action, with Cyborg (voiced by Shemar Moore) facing an underwater attack.

We’ve already seen a clip of the film focusing on a brooding Aquaman (voiced by Matt Lanter) and a more dialogue-driven scene with Cyborg. Both hint at a darker, more mature superhero tale in keeping with the tone of previous entries in the DC Universe Animated series of films. Throne of Atlantis, based on the Geoff Johns story arc of the same name, also looks like it will serve as a solid origin story for Aquaman and perhaps boost the character’s profile prior to his big-screen debut (not to mention the announced solo film starring Jason Momoa).

There are many reasons why Aquaman could be the next big DC hero (read our feature for more). After all, Iron Man was nowhere near the international icon the character has become in the past few years. Perhaps Throne of Atlantis could be paving the way for Warner Bros. and DC to place more of a focus on its underwater hero in the near future. In any case, it doesn’t look like the character will have much competition for a long while.

Screen Ranters, are you looking forward to this sequel to Justice League: War and the introduction of Aquaman, and what challenge would you like to see the team face in their next release? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on January 27, 2015.
