It’s been a big couple of weeks for the Marvel movie universe. Last week, the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer leaked (and was subsequently officially released). Then, Marvel announced a slew of new films, including The Avengers: Infinity War Parts One and Two. And finally, an extended version of the aforementioned Avengers 2 trailer was released with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., featuring the Avengers taking turns trying to lift Thor’s hammer.

After a rather big couple of years for superhero movies (including Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more), 2015 will feel pretty light by comparison, with just Avengers 2, Ant-Man, and Fantastic Four up for release. And that makes the Avengers sequel the most highly-anticipated superhero movie currently in the wings.

Director Joss Whedon recently appeared on Marvel’s webseries “The Watcher” to talk about the film. When asked about where he shot The Avengers 2, Whedon said: “Up in the Italian Alps. We were in Seoul, Korea. We were in Johannesburg. We shot a little in Bangladesh. Then all over England.”
Of course, it’s not a surprise to anyone who has been following The Avengers production that shooting took place all over the planet, a far cry from the first film (which was primarily shot in Cleveland, Ohio).

Whedon then talked about The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s “world perspective“:

“This is a very global film. We wanted the world perspective on The Avengers. They’re being The Avengers and that’s a global thing and it doesn’t make everybody love them, so we wanted to see both sides of that…”

So it seems that Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel will delve into the darker, more complicated side of geo-politics. The Marvel movies thus far have mostly stayed away from the complexities of the political world in favor of a more superficial entertainment value, which has obviously succeeded to a large degree.

Ultimates Two Invasion Joss Whedon on Global Perspective of The Avengers: Age of Ultron
‘The Ultimates 2′ by Mark Millar & Bryan Hitch

Introducing a world that doesn’t much like The Avengers (possibly for their unwanted interference) brings to mind the second volume of Mark Millar’s The Ultimates, where multiple countries teamed up and utilized superheroes of their own to invade the United States of America and bring down S.H.I.E.L.D.

Now, it’s doubtful that something like that will happen in the coming Marvel films, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this worldwide disdain led to the conflict of Captain America: Civil War, wherein Cap/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) will go head-to-head with Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
