Deadpool 2‘s Josh Brolin is singing the praises of the film’s star and producer Ryan Reynolds. The cast and crew members on the sequel to the 2016 blockbuster have experienced a wide range of emotions lately, from the unveiling of the costumes for Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Cable (Brolin), to the fatal crash earlier this month that claimed the life of stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris.

As the cast and crew attempts to recover from the tragedy and tries to complete filming of Deadpool 2 on an upbeat note, Brolin has taken time out to talk about Reynolds and what he brings to the production.

In a new interview with EW, Brolin lauded the tenacity of Reynolds the producer instead of the gifts of Reynolds as an actor — since it was the unwavering commitment of the producer that not only got the first Deadpool made, but ultimately afforded Brolin the opportunity to play Cable because of its success. Brolin says:

“He’s an amazing guy, very smart and really sweet — and really handsome. He’s a smart guy, he’s the one who saw this and tried to get this movie made for eight years and was unable to. I think he has such a perfect sensibility. He’s a great producer on it, there’s a lot to trust there.”

Just by Brolin’s remark about Reynolds being “really handsome,” you can tell that the actor has the same comedic sensibilities as his co-star, which given the first film’s tremendous sense of humor, will go a long way on the sequel. The observation about trust is huge too, considering the faith he has to put in the filmmakers’ vision (whether it be the producer Reynolds or director David Leitch) is absolutely necessary on a film set if it’s to lead to a more cohesive production and ultimately a great movie.

It’s hard to say where the actor’s praise about Reynolds on the opposite side of the camera comes from, but perhaps it stems from Brolin’s time prepping as producer of the country music biopic George and Tammy. A drama set for a 2018 release from director Taylor Hackford, the film stars Brolin and Jessica Chastain as country music icons George Jones and Tammy Wynette, and Brolin’s responsibilities on both sides of the camera will no doubt make him look at the film business in a completely different light.

In the meantime, it will be exciting to see what sort of madness Brolin and Reynolds can stir up as Cable and Deadpool when the film hits theaters next June. Sure, the film won’t be as musical as Brolin’s George and Tammy, but his pairing with Reynolds will almost certainly be harmonious.
