Kingsman 2’s Release Date Moved Forward

While Deadpool and Logan have recently proved that audiences will turn out for good movies even with an R-rating, they were not the first R-rated comic book movies to be successful. Movies such as the first Blade trilogy or even Kick-Ass have shown that these are possible to make, but some of the recent success can be attributed to Kingsman: The Secret Service‘s performance as well. On a medium sized $81 million budget, the movie brought in $414 million worldwide for Fox.

The film was a surprise hit of 2015, with the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, one of the most highly anticipated films of 2017. With Matthew Vaughn back as the director and an expanded cast that includes Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and more (including an appearance from Elton John), it is easy to see why this excitement exists. However, the wait is proving longer than expected; the film was pushed back from its original June release to early October, but that date has been changed once more.

According to Exhibitor Relations, the second Kingsman movie has moved up one week from its October 6th date to now come out on September 29, 2017. With the change being so small, it should not make any difference on the post-production period.

So why would this change happen? Well, seeing as Denis Villenueve’s Blade Runner 2049 is also set to come out October 6th, it is probably in Fox’s best interest to avoid a long awaited sequel helmed by one of the top directors currently in Hollywood.

Instead of going toe-to-toe with Blade Runner 2049, The Golden Circle will instead have competition like the remake of Flatliners and the Tom Cruise-led American Made. There is a possibility that these films could leave now that the next Kingsman film is in this date, but overall this is a small change. Regardless of what movies are coming out around Kingsman or even on the same date, the film should do quite well at the box office.

The franchise already has an established following thanks to the first film’s great blend of unique action and comedy. It proved to be the break-out vehicle for Taron Egerton, and as his popularity has increased since it should further help his sequel. Plot details for the film have remained mostly under wraps, outside of Julianne Moore playing the villain in a story that will be bigger and badder. With the release now just over six months away, hopefully this means that the marketing will begin shortly.
