'Justice League' Adds J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon

'Justice League' Adds J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon

The Justice League has found its Commissioner Gordon.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons has been cast as the Gotham City police commissioner.

Justice League, which will be directed by Zack Snyder, sees heroes Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) teaming up to combat a threat beyond each member's capabilities.

Chris Terrio wrote the screenplay for Justice League, which will be released in two parts by Warner Bros. It is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder.

Justice League: Part One will start shooting in mid-April and is set to hit theaters on Nov. 17, 2017, while Part Two is slated for release on June 14, 2019. Warner Bros.' next DC film is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will bow March 25.

The DC Comics character Commissioner James Gordon has been played by a slew of actors over the years, including Lyle Talbot in the 1949 series Batman and Robin, Neil Hamilton in the TV series Batman in the 1960s, Pat Hingle in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman movie franchise and, most recently, by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight films. The character is an integral part of the Batman literary mythos and is the lead character in Gotham, Fox's take on Gordon's early days, where he is played by Ben McKenzie.

Simmons is already a familiar face in the superhero world as he played publisher J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies.

Simmons has been very busy since winning the best supporting actor Oscar for Whiplash in 2015. He is reteaming with Damien Chazelle for the musical La La Land, and he voices a character in the just-released animated hit film Zootopia. He recently joined Mark Wahlberg in the Boston bombing film Patriots’ Day, and he’ll be seen in The Meddler with Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne, which is due out in April. His other projects in post include The Accountant with Ben Affleck, Bastards with Owen Wilson and Ed Helms and The Snowman with Michael Fassbender. Simmons is repped by Gersh.

Justice league: J.k. Simmons to play commissioner gordon

Warner Bros. has cast J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon for its upcoming two-part Justice League film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actor—who played J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy—joins Ben Affleck's Batman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill's Man of Steel in the superhero ensemble, which will be directed by Zack Snyder.

Simmons has been involved in a number of recent films, including 2015's Whiplash, for which he won an Oscar for best supporting actor. He also voiced Mayor Lionheart in Disney's animated film Zootopia, which debuted this weekend to record-breaking numbers.

Justice League: Part One opens on November 17, 2017 and begins filming next month. Meanwhile, Justice League: Part Two will make its theatrical debut on June 14, 2019. In addition to Simmons, Cavill, Affleck and Gadot, the superhero flick will also feature Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Here's a sneak peek at The Flash's costume.

Unfortunately for Green Lantern fans, the wait for the emerald crusader's silver screen arrival will be a bit longer, as producer Charles Roven has confirmed Green Lantern won't be in Part One and won't appear until Part Two or possibly even later.

Currently, Warner Bros. is gearing up for the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens on March 25.
