Power Rangers Teaser Trailer: A New Team Forms

    http://screenrant.com/power-rangers-...railer-teaser/

Fans of the Power Rangers franchise have had to wait a really long time to see the reboot of the long-running children’s action show in live-action. There have been plenty of pictures (Red Ranger’s Sword, Ranger’s Helmets and Power Coins) and posters to whet people’s appetites, while occasional casting announcements of Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Bill Hader voicing Alpha 5 kept up interest in the movie high. The first look at the Power Rangers’ outfits received less-than-stellar feedback from fans, but every time more images are released, the better they look.

Principle photography on Power Rangers wrapped several months ago, leaving fans wondering why Lionsgate didn’t at least release a teaser trailer for the movie at San Diego Comic-Con this summer. While promoting the movie in that manner seems like something the studio absolutely should have done, truthfully, anything they would have released during that time would have been quickly overshadowed by everything Marvel and DC was doing. Now, the film has a chance to make a huge visual impact at New York Comic-Con this weekend – which they kicked off by releasing four new character posters.

Earlier this year, Cranston described Saban’s Power Rangers as reimagining of the property on par with what Christopher Nolan did with The Dark Knight trilogy. From this first teaser for the film, his statement would certainly appear to be more than just hyperbole. While a brief glimpse of the Ranger’s famous Zords can be seen in the first round of posters, there’s not a hint or mention of the giant robot protectors in this trailer – which is somewhat disappointing. Instead, the studio cut a trailer that feels more “Breakfast Club meets Chronicle“, than it does the classic tropes of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show.

By all accounts, the teenagers in the film are outcasts: Billy Cranston (RJ Cyler) is picked on, Trini (Becky G.) is the bullied girl, Kimberly Hart (Naomi Scott) is the girl looking for acceptance from her friends, Zack Taylor (Ludi Lin) is the loner and Jason Lee Scott (Dacre Montgomery) is the hot head with problems at home – it all has a somber After School Special feel to it. The finished product may not be so serious, but it’s hard to imagine funnyman Bill Hader’s voice as Alpha 5 saying ,“Aye aye aye” after a trailer with such a bleak tone.

Power Rangers is directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), co-written by such screenwriters as Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, and also stars Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. The official synopsis for the movie is below:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
While it’s great to finally see some live-action for the Power Rangers, the teaser itself feels like a bit of letdown, lacking any real “money shot”. Nothing in this first trailer is new or surprising: We’ve seen all five rangers, the power coins, their suits and even Rita Repulsa – this would have benefited greatly had a bigger “oomph” been added to seal the deal.

Power Rangers opens in U.S. theaters on March 24th, 2017.

I loved the Power Rangers as a kid, but I have a feeling this is going to be next year's Fantastic Four reboot.
