AfterShock Comics' new series is inspired by 'Labyrinth' and 'The Dark Crystal,' says writer Justin Jordan.

There is more to the world than meets the eye, and AfterShock Comics' upcoming fantasy series Backways is ready to lift the veil and reveal all — or, at least, more than anyone suspected was out there.

Illustrated by Batgirl and Doctor Who veteran Eleonora Carlini, the new magical series reveals the "hidden nation" that exists in the forgotten spaces of the world — at the bottom of the basement stairs, behind the unopened door in your childhood home, or in the haunted house at the end of the street — and one woman's quest to find someone she once lost in this mysterious space.

"I wanted to tell the story of what things that go bump in the night really are," writer Justin Jordan told Heat Vision about the new series. "I really wanted to do something that felt like things I loved when I was growing up: Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz. This sense of strangeness and awesomeness that's lurking just behind the world we know, if you take the time to look for it."

Backways is Jordan's second original series with AfterShock — his first, Strayer, launched in 2015 — and will debut in comic book stores and digitally Dec. 20 with two covers: one by Carlini and Silvie Tidei, and a second by Ben Templesmith. Both are below, alongside previews of Carlini's interior artwork.
