Any Marvel fan will tell you that Guardians of the Galaxy features one of the most richly developed worlds in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Star-Lord to Rocket to Groot, the film is packed to the brim with some of the most engaging comic book characters ever committed to film. One of the more compelling characters in the entire film is Gamora's evil sister, Nebula, and it seems that James Gunn would love to see her get her own solo movie. Here's what he had to say:

I have a few favorites myself, but I agree that Nebula should lead her own film - it's something I've thought about from the beginning. https://t.co/lyPAA6Hyxw

When addressed by a particularly passionate Nebula fan on Twitter about whether or not the character deserves her own solo movie, James Gunn responded with a resounding level of support. Although Nebula's not necessarily his favorite character in the Guardians of the Galaxy corner of the MCU, he has apparently always thought that she could easily lead her own film. If James Gunn directs that movie, I can guarantee that I will be the first in line for tickets.

Nebula represents an oddity in a film that leans pretty heavily on the good vs. evil binary. Although she was framed as an antagonist throughout the course of Guardians of the Galaxy, she was given far more relatable motivations and drive than someone like Ronan the Accuser. With the character set to make a return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it's pretty clear that she's not done making hell for Gamora and the rest of the Guardians. In fact, James Gunn has already promised that her appearance in the upcoming sequel will thoroughly explore her sisterly relationship with Gamora, so we expect to see quite a bit more nuance out of the daughter of Thanos.

Now for the part where I rain on your parade: as much as we agree with James Gunn, and as great as a Nebula solo movie sounds, it's not very likely at this point. Marvel has not made a single movie centering on a villainous character to date, and the prospect of them starting with someone as obscure as Nebula seems fairly slim. While we wouldn't necessarily be surprised to see villain-centric movies centering on a character like Venom, or even an ensemble movie for The Thunderbolts within the next few years (especially in the wake of Suicide Squad), the idea of Nebula taking center stage for a solo movie of her very own just doesn't seem to be in the cards right now.
