Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Jim Carrey was an unstoppable comedic force. From Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994 to Bruce Almighty in 2003, Carrey’s particular brand of comedy headlined a number of box office smashes, and the actor even experimented with more dramatic fare, scoring back-to-back Golden Globes for his performances in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

For the past decade, Carrey’s star has waned a bit, as his most successful onscreen efforts have been animated films like Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who and Disney’s motion-capture adaptation of A Christmas Carol. While recent releases The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Kick-Ass 2 failed to connect with critics or audiences, Carrey’s supporting turns in both were considered highlights, and his return to one of his iconic film roles in this year’s Dumb and Dumber To seems to indicate that the funnyman may be aiming to reclaim his former glory.

Now Deadline reports that Carrey is poised to reteam with Red Granite, the company who financed and produced Dumb and Dumber To, for a comedy currently titled Deep Cover. At this point, plot details for the film have not yet been revealed, but the story was pitched by writer Johnny Rosenthal, who previously wrote a draft of Bad Santa 2 and has action comedy Iron Jack in development. If he does sign on, Carrey will also serve as a producer on the film, as he did on both Bruce Almighty and Fun with Dick and Jane.

Given that Dumb and Dumber To landed Carrey’s best live-action opening in more than a decade, it’s easy to see why that film’s producers are eager to collaborate with Carrey again. The question remains if Deep Cover can continue his career upswing. Without an idea about the film’s premise (could Carrey be channeling his inner Ace Ventura on an undercover mission of some kind?), it’s hard to say, considering that other 1990s comedy stars have seen their careers suffer with the changing times.

After all, it’s been 20 years since Carrey’s big-screen breakthrough, and the star will likely need to win the support of today’s youth to truly dig up box office gold once again.
