Though it is perhaps not his most financially successful franchise, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy – as well as its sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army – was an adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comic book and it garnered a strong cult following. For many years, del Toro and Hellboy himself, Ron Pearlman, have been vocal about the progress of a third installment to the series: Hellboy 3. Since del Toro began working with Legendary Pictures on Pacific Rim – which has since been broadened to include an expanded universe – there was speculation the studio and director could work together on Hellboy 3.

Del Toro has since commented on the story of Hellboy 3, which he has put significant effort into, as well as the reason a studio may be hesitant to green light the threequel. Though it seemed Hellboy 3 was unlikely to be made, Jeffrey Tambor, who co-starred in both Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, recently offered new hope to fans.

While promoting his new show, Transparent, on The Colbert Report, Tambor was asked about the progress made on a third installment to the Hellboy film series. Though Tambor revealed that there have been talks concerning a Hellboy 3, the discussion seems to be moving forward at a slow pace.

Read Tambor’s full quote:

“There is actually talk of a ‘Hellboy 3,’ but they better hurry or I’m going to be in a walker.”

Tambor’s update on the progress of Hellboy 3 sounds promising at first, but it seems to be another iteration of the same comment: the fans, the stars, the story, and the director are all there, but the studio is hesitant to get on board. Though del Toro’s recent success with Pacific Rim may give him more bankability, Hellboy’s small but fervent fanbase doesn’t seem to give the studio enough encouragement for the third film to get a green light.

That being said, Hellboy 3 isn’t a lost cause. As we’ve seen recently with the buzz surrounding Deadpool created by leaked test footage, then the official green light given to the film, it’s certainly possible for a property that was thought to be dead to come back to life in a big way. Whether or not that will happen with Hellboy 3, though, remains to be seen.
