Fans tracking the development of the DC Cinematic Universe had to be excited by the recent hiring of James Wan for Aquaman. As these movies inch closer to becoming reality, it’s thrilling to learn who will be leading the charge. But none of us could have been more intrigued than Mr. Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, and the actor had this message to send to his new collaborator.

Given the recent failure of Cameron Crowe’s Aloha, I might have chosen a different word other than the traditional greeting that Jason Momoa uses, but the sentiment is conveyed, nonetheless. James Wann officially is on board for Aquaman, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2018. Aquaman is the second DC movie scheduled to drop that year, after The Flash. It’s worth pointing out that while The Flash has cast Ezra Miller, and hired Phil Lord and Chris Miller to pen a story, that films has no director yet.

Maybe Warner Bros. went after James Wan so that he can begin strategizing how best to film his superhero movie underwater. That, to me, stands out as the lingering question of an Aquaman movie. The hero controls the world’s oceans, and we assume that large chunks of the movie will have to take place under water. How will they simulate that? How will actors like Momoa and whomever else is added act while submerged? Or will Atlantis be a kingdom with interiors, which is where the bulk of the action will take place?

James Wan previously was known for his horror efforts, having helmed Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, to name a few. But he’s coming off of the MASSIVE success of this year’s Furious 7, which likely opened up his name to plenty of conversations about directing tentpole pictures. Also, thanks to Furious 7, Wan has experience directing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who will play Black Adam in a Shazam movie. Maybe these two will find a way to cross paths in a DC movie down the line?

The hiring of Wan furthers the studio’s recently stated mandate of handing superhero projects to artists and filmmakers who will bring their own style to the genre… and not just plugging in guns-for-hire with nothing new to say. This could be a daunting task for James Wan. At least it looks like he has Jason Momoa’s blessing from the onset.
