Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has revealed that he'll be presenting a new project during Sony's Hall H panel at Comic-Con 2018, and the teaser image indicates it could be a Bloodborne movie. Though he's currently best-known for bringing Marvel's roving band of space heroes to the big screen, Gunn's filmmaking roots are firmly in the horror genre, with movies like Slither, Dawn of the Dead, and (more recently) The Belko Experiment. He's also dabbled in video games before, collaborating with Suda51 on the zombie hack-'em-up game Lollipop Chainsaw.

Released in 2015, Bloodborne is an action RPG game with heavy horror elements, developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It shares the devilishly difficult gameplay that characterized previous games like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. The game sees the player traveling through a world corrupted by a terrible plague, trying to find a way to end it while also fighting off a plethora of horrible beasts and monsters.

One thing is certain: James Gunn has something to show at this week year's Comic-Con. The director posted the teaser image below to his Facebook page, and the time matches up to Sony's scheduled Hall H panel. The metallic background and blood-red letters certainly indicate that the secret project is a horror movie, and the scratched symbol resembles the Heir rune from Bloodborne. Check out Gunn's post below, along with the Heir rune for comparison.

Now, this may be a bit of a stretch, since the symbol in Gunn's post isn't exactly like the rune from Bloodborne - just reminiscent of it. However, between Gunn being known for his horror credentials, this being a Sony panel, and the similarity between the two markings (right down to them being scratched into a dark background), it definitely seems like a possibility. Sony has recently been trying to translate the success of its video game properties over to the movie side of things at Sony Pictures, with a film adaptation of the Uncharted games already in development. Bloodborne was a hit, selling more than 2 million copies within the first few months of its release, so it makes sense that Sony would want to capitalize on that further.

Video game movies have a bit of a bad reputation, mostly due to the fact that, well, they're usually not very good. However, this year's Tomb Raider movie reboot proved to be a modest success earlier this year, grossing $273 million worldwide, and Hollywood still seems determined to tap into the success of the video game market, which generated well over $100 billion in revenues last year.

If Gunn's project isn't a Bloodborne movie, then our next best guess is that it's another original horror movie like The Belko Experiment, which was scripted by Gunn and directed by Greg McLean. Gunn is currently set to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios, but since that won't release until 2020 at the absolute earliest, he has time to spare for a smaller project in the interim. Whatever it is, we're certainly looking forward to finding out more on Friday.
