With Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales headed to home video in the upcoming weeks, a new deleted scene from the film is available online. The moment that was left on the cutting room floor features Captain Jack Sparrow and Henry Turner locked in a tense ship-set standoff, with the captain revealing he’s always got a trick up his sleeve.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a massive blockbuster surprise back in 2003 and cemented Johnny Depp’s status as a global movie star. Four sequels later, the wind is still blowing in the franchise’s sails, though it’s not quite the gale force that propelled the original trilogy. Still, Dead Men Tell No Tales was a slight improvement on On Stranger Tides, and was once again a financial smash internationally.
Dead Man Tell No Tales will be available to own digitally on September 19 and on Blu-ray October 3. Moviefone has premiered one of the deleted scenes from the home release, a scene pitting Depp’s Sparrow against Brenton Thwaites’ Henry Turner. The scene presumably takes place toward the middle of the film, with the characters full speed ahead into their quest to find the Fountain of Youth. Henry makes it clear that he’ll do anything to save his father Will (Orlando Bloom), who, of course, is trapped as captain of the Flying Dutchman for eternity. Jack doesn’t take kindly to threats, and deviously toys with the boy like the pirate that he is, goading him into attempted murder before turning the tables.


The punchline is the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark sequence, as Jack unsheathes his pistol against the threat of a blade piercing him. It’s the kind of scenario that comfortably fits the Sparrow character, always thinking several steps ahead and not afraid to remind the audience that no matter how much we love him, he is indeed a dastardly pirate.
As far as deleted scenes go, ‘Henry Turner Learns a Lesson From Captain Jack’ is entertaining, but not necessarily essential. Although the interplay between Henry and Jack is reminiscent of the exchange Will Turner had with Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl, it clearly isn’t a connection the filmmakers felt was integral to the film’s success. Besides, with most films in the Pirates franchise enjoying rather long runtimes, any cut is likely the right one.
