Marvel Studios has officially set a Captain Marvel 2 release date for 2022. It took 11 years, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally released their first female-led solo movie at the beginning of last year. Captain Marvel took the MCU back to 1995 to tell the origin of Carol Danvers aka. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). The movie was a bonafide box office hit earning over $1.1 billion worldwide.

It wasn't long after that Captain Marvel returned to the MCU, as she had a supporting role in Avengers: Endgame just a few weeks later. Carol made an impact on the movie when she was on screen, but her screen time was much smaller than many anticipated. As a result, there is plenty of interest in seeing her back in a leading capacity. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that they are working on Captain Marvel 2, but no other details were given at that time.

Ever since then, fans have been left wondering when Captain Marvel's next adventure will arrive in theaters. Disney previously announced new release dates through 2023 and it didn't take long for speculation to mount over which one could be for Captain Marvel 2. After much debate, the studios have finally made it official: Captain Marvel 2 will hit theaters on July 8, 2022.

This date for Captain Marvel 2 comes as Marvel Studios announced a sweeping change to the Phase 4 release slate. Following the delay of Black Widow due to coronavirus, the studio gave almost every Phase 4 movie a new release date. While this means MCU fans will have to wait even longer for Phase 4 to begin, at least Marvel also provided some additional info by adding Captain Marvel 2 to the schedule. It was previously reported that the sequel was being eyed for a 2022 release date, but it is unclear if July 8 is always the date the studios had in mind.

With Captain Marvel 2's release date now confirmed, it hopefully won't be too long before more information on the sequel surfaces. The most pressing piece of intel fans are waiting to learn at the moment is who will direct the movie, as Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are not expected to return and may tackle a Disney+ project instead. There are no shortage of female directors who could take on Captain Marvel 2 either. The story is expected to take place in the present day too, which will allow the movie to push Carol Danvers' story forward with the rest of the MCU, while also possibly filling in some gaps along the way.
