Harrison Ford is suited up and back in action with the first Indiana Jones 5 image from Lucasfilm. Ford is returning for the fifth installment in the long-running action franchise as the titular archaeologist alongside newcomers Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas and Olivier Richters. Plot details are being kept under lock and key for Indiana Jones 5 but is expected to be both a sequel and prequel.

James Mangold, the two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Logan and Ford v. Ferrari, is at the helm for Indiana Jones 5, having penned the script with his fellow Ford co-writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Development on the film has languished for nearly 15 years as creator George Lucas struggled to find the right story for the project and Steven Spielberg handed the directing reins to Mangold in the hopes of breathing new life to the franchise. With filming having finally wrapped in February, audiences are getting the first glimpse at Indiana Jones 5.

After revealing it at the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase for the Star Wars Celebration Event, the official Indiana Jones Twitter account has revealed the first Indiana Jones 5 image. The still sees Ford back in action as the iconic hero as he ventures through a dark cave for his latest adventure. Check out the exciting first image below:

While audiences might be hungry for more than an image, the first look at Indiana Jones 5 is sure to come as a welcome surprise for longtime fans of the franchise. Seeing Ford back in his iconic fedora and treading across an ancient-looking bridge is sure to swell up a nostalgic feeling in viewers, especially with the titular hero bathed in a yellowish glow, the franchise's iconic color hue as seen in the various title treatments and posters. With the Indiana Jones 5 image feeling like a dramatic pose over an actual still from the film, it will be interesting to see whether this cave setting fits into the story come the film's release.

Anticipation has been mostly high for Indiana Jones 5 over the past few years after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm saw development start to gain steam in 2016 as the studio put attention back on the franchise with Star Wars back up and running. Though 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left many fans with a bad taste in their mouths from the overuse of CGI and outlandish set pieces, having new blood in the form of Mangold and his Ford v. Ferrari writers at the helm has many hopeful it will return to its glory days. Only time will tell if the wait is worth it when Indiana Jones 5 hits theaters on June 30, 2023.
