Hasraf "HaZ" Dulull was a visual effects supervisor who worked on movies such as The Dark Knight. He decided to stretch his muscles with some eye-popping shorts that impressed, and soon producers were giving him shots at feature films.

He recently wrapped on his second feature, Origin Unknown, starring Katee Sackhoff, but his first movie was The Beyond, a faux-documentary sci-fi thriller that he wrote, directed and edited, as well as conjuring up the majority of the visual effects (with support from VFX houses with whom he has relationships).

One of his aims: to do for sci-fi what Blumhouse did for horror. Meaning, to find low-budget approaches and execute in ways that make the movies feel bigger than their budgets.

The indie chronicles the groundbreaking mission that sent astronauts — modified with advanced robotics — through a newly discovered wormhole known as the Void. When the mission returns unexpectedly, the space agency races to discover what the astronauts encountered on their first-of-its-kind interstellar journey.

The film was produced by HaZ’s production company Sector 99 and Scott Glassgold’s Ground Control Entertainment. It is loosely based on his 2014 short, Project Kronos.

The movie now hopes to hit the festival/market circuit.
