How Deadpool 2 Will Address The First Movie's Success, According To Ryan Reynolds

Deadpool has a lot of classic traits. The red and black suit. The two swords. The never-ending wisecracks to anyone in his immediate vicinity. However, arguably the thing that separates him most from his fellow Marvel protagonists is how he breaks the fourth wall, addressing the folks following along with his shenanigans on the printed page or screen. Last year's Deadpool movie didn't shy away from this element, and when Deadpool 2 is released, we can expect there will be some kind of reference to the Merc With the Mouth's big screen success.

While discussing all of the accolades Deadpool has received in recent months and whether it's possible the movie could win an Academy Award, Ryan Reynolds told Variety that there will likely be some kind of reference in Deadpool 2 to its predecessor's acclaim. He said:

I don't know that he'll talk about awards season, but maybe something about how great the year has been. Maybe Deadpool will have, like, 20% more self-loathing because of it.

Given all the self-referential humor Deadpool contained, from Wade Wilson admitting he fondled Wolverine's balls to get his own movie to asking whether the Professor X Colossus mentioned was played by Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy, not having some kind of commentary on Deadpool's success in the sequel would have been weird. There doesn't need to be a mention of Golden Globe nominations or anything like that, but Wade should at least point out his movie dominated in theaters.

After Wade Wilson's unfortunate debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and his solo adventure spending years in development hell, Deadpool was finally released last year and went on to accumulate over $780 million worldwide off a $58 million budget, not to mention was positively received by many fans and critics. That's no small feat. Of course, just because 2016 was a good year for Wade doesn't mean that his life is all sunshine and roses now. Like Ryan Reynolds suggested, he might just find himself loathing himself just a tad more because there's a lot more popularity pressure on him.

Plot details regarding Deadpool 2 are scarce, but the movie is slowly putting together its cast. Besides Ryan Reynolds obviously reprising Wade Wilson, it's been confirmed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus and Dopinder the cab driver will all return. As for new players, Cable and Domino will be introduced, although they haven't been cast yet, at least publicly. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are penning the sequel, while John Wick co-director David Leitch was hired last November to helm the sequel.

With production slated to begin later this year, Deadpool 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2018, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress.

Deadpool is one of the best movies of 2016. I love it. Fits Ryan Reynolds' persona perfectly. I've watched it a few times since the initial release. It's really funny, breaks the 4th wall and last but not least - T.J. Miller's performance. He's fierce. Honestly, I can't wait for the sequel. Only one complaint - the first one was too short. I expected around 2 hours. I hope the new one's going to be longer.
