Film and television studio Media Rights Capital is looking to resume production on Netflix’s House of Cards. The hit series, which was Netflix’s breakout into original programming, was put on hold following allegations of Kevin Spacey’s sexual misconduct. The series was just beginning production on its sixth season when the allegations broke and since then, there has been uncertainty about whether the series would have a definite ending, or if it would just be canceled.

During the past month, sexual harassment allegations have been made against Spacey starting with Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp, who accused the actor of making an unwanted sexual advance when he was 14 years old. Since, Spacey has been accused of harassing filmmaker Tony Montana, actor Roberto Cavazos, Richard Dreyfuss’ son Harry, eight people who worked on House of Cards and more. For Spacey, the allegations have been met by the actor’s Gore Vidal biopic being dropped by Netflix, being recast in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, and cut from the upcoming 50th anniversary special of The Carol Burnett Show.

Spacey’s best-known series, House of Cards, has been left in limbo since the series halted production and Netflix cut all ties with the actor, leading many to believe Spacey’s character, Frank Underwood, will be killed off-screen. It has now been revealed by TVLine that House of Cards is aiming to resume production on their sixth and final season sometime after December 8. Here is a section of the letter obtained by TVLine written by an MRC executive detailing their plans to the cast and crew:
We continue to work with Netflix with the hope of resuming production soon. As we continue these discussions, we have determined together that the crew will be paid for an additional two week hiatus – beginning on November 27th and continuing through December 8th.

In addition to the writers, there will be a small contingency of office/accounting staff who will remain in the production office on a continuous basis. Our hope is that the entire crew will be able to reconvene when production resumes, but we want you to know that we will certainly understand if crew members need to find other work in the interim, which will prevent them from re-joining us. We sincerely appreciate all you have done.

Cast and other union members who are not actively working will be paid in accordance with applicable union guidelines through this period and we will be reaching out directly to your representatives to work through the details; we will get to everyone as quickly as possible and appreciate all of your patience here.

These last two months have tested and tried all of us in ways none of us could have foreseen. The one thing we have learned throughout this process is that this production is bigger than just one person and we could not be more proud to be associated with one of the most loyal and talented production cast and crews in this business.
It’s good to know that House of Cards is hoping to continue on without Spacey. Even though he is the backbone of the series and his performance as the ruthless Frank Underwood will be forever remembered as a standout, the series has the opportunity to do more with Robin Wright’s character, Claire Underwood – who became president in Frank’s stead at the end of season 5 claiming that it was her turn in the seat of power.

While it’s unsure whether the series will hold up with Claire as the potential lead, fans should be happy that Netflix is doing everything they can to give the series a proper ending.
