Hotel That Inspired 'The Shining' to Open Museum and Film Center
The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., is probably best known for its inspirational role in Stephen King’s bestseller “The Shining” — and now it may become a horror museum.
The hotel, which inspired the Overlook Hotel in the 1977 book, recently announced its plans to include a horror-themed museum along with a film production studio and film archive in a new facility it hopes to build, according to the LA Times.
Elijah Wood and Simon Pegg are among the founding board members of the new Stanley Film Center, which will call for an auditorium, museum, traveling film exhibits, a sound stage and space for post-production and editing.
It will run as a nonprofit public-private partnership that will collaborate with Colorado Film School on educational projects.
The Stanley Hotel is seeking $11.5 million from the state’s tourism funds to put towards the facility’s $24 million price tag.
While the hotel is currently banking on King’s horror novel and adapted film for its annual ghost tours and the horror film festival, the idea behind the new facility will be to make it a “year-round horror destination.”
