With Mike Mignola and Neil Marshall pushing forward with a hard reboot of the Hellboy series, lead actor David Harbour is confirming that the movie has already wrapped production.

Based on Mignola’s Dark Horse comic series that started back in 1993, Harbour will be sticking on some red paint and a pair of worn-down horns to play the demonic Anung Un Rama. Originally titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, the movie later dropped its subtitle to go with the much simpler Hellboy (for now). While the plot is still being kept tightly under wraps, the fact that production has already ended hints there could be a flurry of information about to head our way.

Speaking to Variety , the 42-year-old Stranger Things veteran admitted his time on the set had been tough, but that work on Marshall’s reboot is further along than we first thought:

“It was hard. I’m 40 years old, and I’m running around punching giants.”

However, slated for a January 2019 release , there is still a big wait before fans get to see Big Red on their screens once again. By the time Hellboy hits theaters, there will have been over a decade since we last saw the series’ rag-tag bunch of characters, so it is safe to say that the hype is high around the project.

Following a troubled start since being announced last year, the dust finally seems to have settled around a new era of Hellboy. After Guillermo del Toro crafted his two cult movies Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), there were fevered talks that Ron Perlman might once again play the muscular menace and round off del Toro’s intended trilogy. However, there was some major backlash when it was announced that Mignola was starting from scratch and Marshall was aiming for a hard R-rating for the world of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Now, with a first look at Harbour in the Hellboy role – and with an all-star cast like Ian McShane, Milla Jovovich, and Daniel Dae Kim – there are high hopes that a darker take on the source material may be the way forward. Harbour has certainly put the work in, transforming his “dad bod” into the impressive physique that the titular character is known for. As Hellboy now heads into post, expect more pictures of Harbour in costume, more snaps of the cast in action, and possibly even a retitle for the movie now that it has dropped its Blood Queen add-on.
