Eduard Fernandez leads cast for 8-episode horror series that starts shooting next week in Spain, Italy and Israel.


HBO Europe has unveiled the cast and production details on its new original horror series 30 Coins from leading Spanish genre director Alex de la Iglesia.


Eduard Fernandez (Everybody Knows) will star as Father Vergara, an exorcist, boxer and ex-convict, who is exiled by the church to a remote town in Spain. There, a series of paranormal events expose his past and unravel a conspiracy that will lead straight to the heart of the Vatican.


The eight-episode series will co-star Miguel Angel Silvestre (Sense 8, Narcos), Macarena Gomez (Witching and Bitching), Megan Montaner (Grand Hotel), Pepon Nieto (Perfect Strangers) and Manolo Solo (The Fury of a Patient Man).


De la Iglesia scripted the series with longtime writing partner Jorge Guerricaechevarria. Shooting, which starts next week, will take place in Madrid, Salamanca and Pedraza in Spain, as well as in Rome and Jerusalem.


The series is a Pokeepsie Films production for HBO Europe. It will premiere day-and-date across HBO Europe territories. Executive Producers for HBO Europe are Miguel Salvat, Steve Matthews and Antony Root.


The Basque director is known for Spanish hits like Perfect Strangers and The Day of the Beast. His 2010 film The Last Circus won the Silver Lion for best director and a Golden Osella for best original screenplay at Venice.


HBO Europe currently has several projects in production across its European territories: Patria, El Pionero and Foodie Love in Spain, Gösta, Beartown and Beforeigners in Scandinavia, and in Central Europe The Sleepers, Umbre III and Wataha III.
